I believe that you really do think the truck is quiet, but no way would I be able to sleep with that type of low-pitched hum occurring daily in the middle of my sleep cycle anywhere within a hundred feet of my home. I know you think it's nothing, but you're very likely ruining your neighbor's quality of life with even just that one thing.

Oh I feel your pain. At this moment, my grouchy, old woman neighbor is blasting her radio; a habit she has when my kids come outside to play. She used to be much worse.. One summer it was everyday morning til night, BLASTING either explicit rap music (?) or the Mexican radio station.. she is a little old white lady, and would not listen to either. I then noticed that they weren't even home, but had positioned their radio to face my fence and just left it playing all day! How rude! We have 5 children, I homeschool them, but I make sure they are not unusually loud. I never allow them to scream when they are playing, always remind them to be a bit quiter for the neighbor, and bring my dog in everytime she barks. We bring them cooking every Christmas, try to make small talk and nothing seems to work. We bought our house here and love it.. very big yards (we're not crunched right next to them!) and I have no plans for leaving. They have lived her for 35 years (the first on the street) and there are not many young families around here. They were friends with the people that lived here before (also lived here for 35 years), and I think they can't come to grips that WE live her now and we have kids! It really bothers me.. I feel like they should go live in a retirement community if they want quiet. If she starts the music again this summer, I will either try and confront her nicely (although they won't answer the door) or just play my own music louder! I hate that I have to stress about her all the time. Good luck to you..

Dear Sally,
You made a right decision. We built a house in an older neighborhood. Our house is bigger than our neighbors' and this fact makes them unhappy. An old maid who lives on our left side calls police every time a ball accidently rolls on her yard that is "decorated" with "No trespassing" signs. Today, she had a tree service trimming her tree. They entered our yard and began their work. I wanted my neighbor to taste her own medicine and told the workers to stay on her property. The men called me all kinds of names while my neighbor was enjoying it. She got her tree trimmed, name calling and entertaining morning for one low price. I've learned a lesson to never go down to a crazy neighbors' level. It's not worth it.

When I first had my daughter, we lived in a small place and had problems with waking her up at the slightest noise. We bought her a white noise machine ( about $30 on Amazon, still works every night even 3 years later). It definitely helped with my light sleeper. Maybe suggest to her she get one or buy her one as a "neighborly gift".

Boris Knott replies-excellent suggestion

My husband has a diesel truck and yes, they have to run for a few minutes to warm up. My husband's must reach 140 degrees before he can even drive it. He plugs it into a block heater at night in the winter, and even when it is below 0, it is warmed up within 10-20 minutes. It definitely shouldn't take an hour, that is just wasting fuel, and expensive fuel at that. Some people need those trucks, they are necessary for certain jobs. That is why my husband owns his.
